The Rose Effect, What a Fascinating Study Reveals About Scent, the Brain & Everyday Rituals
Can something as simple as the scent of a rose influence the human brain?
For centuries, rose has been associated with beauty, emotion, romance and ritual. But modern research is beginning to explore something even more intriguing: what happens inside the brain when we experience a scent continuously over time?
A 2024 study published in Brain Research Bulletin investigated exactly this question, examining whether continuous exposure to rose scent could be associated with measurable changes in human brain structure.
The results offer a fascinating glimpse into the relationship between scent, sensory experience and the brain.
A Month of Rose: What Did Researchers Discover?
Researchers Keisuke Kokubun, Kiyotaka Nemoto and Yoshinori Yamakawa studied 50 healthy women, with 28 participants in the intervention group and 22 in the control group.
The intervention group wore clothing infused with a designated rose scent continuously for one month. Brain images were taken before and after the intervention using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
The researchers reported an increase in gray-matter volume across the whole brain, as well as in a specific region known as the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC).
Interestingly, they did not observe significant changes in the gray-matter volume of the amygdala or orbitofrontal cortex.
The authors described the research as the first study to demonstrate that continuous scent inhalation was associated with measurable changes in brain structure.
Why Is This Interesting?
Our sense of smell is remarkably connected to the brain.
Unlike many other sensory experiences, olfactory information has particularly direct connections with brain regions involved in emotion, memory and perception.
This is one reason a scent can suddenly transport us somewhere:
A rose can remind you of someone.
A familiar perfume can bring back an entire moment.
A particular room can feel instantly comforting because of the fragrance associated with it.
Scent isn't simply something we experience in the background. It can become part of the memories and emotional associations we create around our environment.
But There Is an Important Distinction
The study is fascinating, but it should not be interpreted as proof that rose essential oil grows the brain, improves intelligence, prevents dementia or treats neurological conditions.
The study was relatively small, involved healthy women, and examined one particular form of continuous rose-scent exposure over one month.
The researchers measured changes in gray-matter volume using MRI; they did not establish that the participants experienced improved intelligence, memory or cognitive performance as a result.
More research is needed to understand why the observed changes occurred and whether the findings can be replicated in larger and more diverse populations.
That distinction matters.
Science is most powerful when we allow intriguing discoveries to remain intriguing while further research continues.
Bringing the Rose Ritual Into Your Home
At ZENZAR, we believe fragrance can be more than simply making a room smell beautiful.
It can become part of a daily ritual.
The moment you enter your home.
The first spray before guests arrive.
The gentle diffusion of fragrance throughout the day.
The quiet evening ritual when the lights are low and the outside world begins to disappear.
This is where the ZENZAR Roses Collection was created.
The ZENZAR Roses Collection
Our rose collection brings together the timeless character of rose with carefully considered home-fragrance rituals.
🌹 Rose Reed Diffuser
The ZENZAR Rose Reed Diffuser is designed to provide a continuous fragrance experience through natural rattan reeds, allowing the scent to gradually disperse into your surroundings.
Rather than a single burst of fragrance, a reed diffuser becomes part of the atmosphere of a room — quietly present as you move through your day.
Its purpose is simple:
to make fragrance part of the environment you live in.
🌹 Rose Room Sprayer
For those moments when you want fragrance immediately, the ZENZAR Rose Room Sprayer offers a more instantaneous way to refresh your surroundings.
A few sprays can transform the atmosphere of a bedroom, living space, dressing room or entranceway in seconds.
It is the difference between continuous ambience and an intentional fragrance moment.
🌹 Pure Rose Essential Oil
At the heart of the collection is the timeless character of rose.
Pure rose essential oil has been treasured in aromatherapy and perfumery for generations, valued for its distinctive floral aroma and association with beauty, calm and ritual.
The 2024 study makes the story even more fascinating: researchers specifically investigated continuous exposure to a rose scent and observed measurable changes in gray-matter volume after one month of exposure.
This does not mean that using a ZENZAR diffuser or room sprayer will reproduce the study's results. The study used a specific experimental exposure and cannot be directly translated into a product-health claim.
Instead, it gives us something more interesting to consider:
Could the fragrances we surround ourselves with become an important part of the way we experience our environments?
Fragrance as a Daily Ritual
Luxury doesn't always have to be something dramatic.
Sometimes, luxury is the scent waiting for you when you open the door.
It's the rose fragrance drifting through the room while you read.
It's a quiet moment before bed.
It's creating an environment that feels distinctly yours.
At ZENZAR, this is what we mean by fragrance as ritual.
Our Roses Collection is designed around that philosophy — bringing together refined fragrance, beautiful objects and the sensory experience of living with scent.
Because perhaps the most beautiful part of fragrance isn't simply how a room smells.
It's how the experience makes the room feel.
And as neuroscience continues to explore the extraordinary relationship between scent and the human brain, the humble rose may have considerably more to tell us.
